Former WBO super-bantamweight world champion Isaac Dogboe has announced his retirement from professional boxing, bringing the curtain down on a career that established him as one of Ghana’s most accomplished fighters.
The 31-year-old, popularly known as “The Royal Storm”, confirmed his decision in an emotional message to fans, ending a journey that saw him rise from a promising young talent to a world champion on the global stage.
Dogboe retires with a professional record of 24 wins, four defeats and 16 knockouts, having competed against some of the biggest names across two weight divisions.
His finest moment came in April 2018 when he defeated American Jessie Magdaleno to capture the WBO super-bantamweight title. The victory made Dogboe Ghana’s youngest-ever world boxing champion at the age of 23 and secured his place among the country’s boxing greats.
Known for his relentless aggression and fighting spirit, Dogboe stopped Magdaleno in the 11th round to claim the title before making a successful defence against Japan’s Hidenori Otake, whom he dispatched in the opening round.
His reign as champion was ended by Mexico’s Emanuel Navarrete, who defeated him in successive bouts. However, Dogboe refused to allow those setbacks to define his career and responded by rebuilding in the featherweight division.
The Ghanaian recorded impressive victories over Chris Avalos, Adam Lopez and Christopher Diaz as he sought another world title opportunity. He later challenged Cuban star Robeisy Ramirez for the WBO featherweight championship and also faced Nick Ball in a WBC final eliminator.
Throughout his career, Dogboe earned a reputation as one of boxing’s most fearless competitors. His trademark slogan, “Neho” – meaning “to uproot” – became synonymous with his never-say-die attitude and endeared him to fans both in Ghana and abroad.
Away from the ring, Dogboe remained committed to the growth of boxing in Ghana, serving as an inspiration to young fighters aspiring to follow his path to the top of the sport.
Announcing his retirement on Instagram, the former champion paid tribute to the supporters who backed him throughout his career.
“Glory Be To The LORD ALMIGHTY and Thank you boxing fans and supporters… Your Support Over The Years Is Greatly Appreciated. Words alone cannot express my sincerest gratitude. Thank you!! NEHO!! Isaac ‘Royal Storm’ Dogboe. This Is Goodbye.”
Dogboe’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Ghanaian boxing history.
From becoming the nation’s youngest world champion to overcoming adversity and competing at the highest level for more than a decade, he leaves behind a legacy defined by determination, resilience and achievement.
While his gloves may now be hung up for good, Dogboe’s impact on Ghanaian boxing and his memorable performances inside the ring are likely to endure for years to come. The Royal Storm may have said goodbye to professional boxing, but his place in the sport’s history remains secure.
