Injured Francis Abu could make Black Stars squad for 2026 World Cup

Midfielder Francis Abu may still force his way into Ghana’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, with encouraging updates emerging from the Black Stars camp, Asempa FM reports.

The 25-year-old suffered a serious setback in last Friday’s friendly defeat to Japan in Toyota, where he was forced off in the second half after fracturing his ankle. Abu, who started the match, was replaced by Alidu Seidu and taken by ambulance to Toyota Memorial Hospital.

On Sunday, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed that he had undergone successful surgery. Initial fears suggested the Toulouse midfielder would be ruled out of the global tournament, but recent updates point to a far more positive outlook.

According to a report by Nhyira FM’s Head of Sports, Bismark Owusu Bempah, on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, the team’s medical staff are optimistic that Abu could return to full fitness within four months—a timeline that would keep him in contention for a place at the World Cup, jointly hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Should his recovery progress as expected, Abu will be considered for selection for the final squad next summer.

Meanwhile, Ghana continue their Asian tour with a depleted squad. The Black Stars will face South Korea on Tuesday with only 19 players available, after Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Salisu withdrew due to injury. Kick-off is at 10:00 a.m.
