Inferiority complex killing musicians in Kumasi – MC Portfolio

Event MC and cultural advocate, MC Portfolio, has raised concerns about what he describes as an inferiority complex that is hindering the growth of musicians in Kumasi.

Speaking at the Rapperholic Seminar in Kumasi, he highlighted that despite the city’s abundant talent, creatives from the Ashanti Region are often made to feel second-class within the music industry.

“Many artists in the Ashanti Region struggle to receive the recognition they deserve—not just from fans and industry stakeholders, but from themselves,” he explained.

Portfolio noted the double standard in media coverage, saying, “In Kumasi, even when creatives release works on a national scale, they are still labeled as ‘Kumasi artistes.’ Meanwhile, when an Accra-based artiste puts out a project, it is their name that headlines the story, not their location.”

He emphasized that the industry must begin valuing Kumasi artistes based on their talent and merit, insisting that some of the city’s musicians outperform their counterparts in Accra.

Portfolio concluded by calling for a shift in mindset, stressing that changing this narrative is the first step toward genuine progress for Kumasi’s music scene.
