I’m not a ‘Dbee,’ my father died when I was 12 – D-Black

Rapper and founder of Black Avenue Muzik, D-Black, has set the record straight about his upbringing, dismissing claims that he was raised in privilege.

In a candid revelation, he shared that his father passed away when he was just 12 years old, leaving his mother to single-handedly raise him and his siblings. He said this experience shaped his journey and instilled in him resilience and determination.

Responding to a fan who labeled him a “dbee” — slang for a rich man’s son — after he tweeted about Ghana’s economic struggles, D-Black clarified that his life story is far from privileged.

“Town make hard oo. Or ebe me? Chale,” he posted, sparking the debate. He later explained that his family’s survival was due to his mother’s hard work and God’s grace, stressing that his current success should not be mistaken as evidence of an easy upbringing.

“People shouldn’t judge where I come from based on what they see now,” he noted, adding that his mother’s sacrifices were the foundation of his achievements as both a musician and entrepreneur.

In October 2024, D-Black also made headlines when he disclosed that if given the role of Tourism Minister, he would dissolve the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO), and Copyrights Society of Ghana (COSGA), arguing that the institutions had failed to fulfill their purpose and required a complete overhaul.
