New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Ing. Kwabena Agyepong has pledged to scrap the compulsory retirement age of 70 for Supreme Court justices if he wins the party’s leadership race and later becomes President of Ghana.
The former party general secretary made the announcement on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, while presenting his six-pillar policy agenda ahead of the NPP’s presidential primaries.
Mr. Agyepong said the proposal is part of a broader package of judicial reforms aimed at strengthening the independence and stability of Ghana’s judiciary.
“I will undertake stakeholder consultations to introduce a cap of 11 judges on our Supreme Court and abolish the retirement age of 70,” he stated. “This will allow Supreme Court judges to serve until they are medically unable to perform their functions.”
He added that the move would also reduce the political leverage presidents have in shaping the apex court.
“I believe this policy will limit the opportunity for Presidents to pack the Supreme Court with their favourites and restore the true independence of our judiciary,” Mr. Agyepong said.
The NPP is expected to select its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections on January 31, 2026, with several aspirants competing for the ticket.
