The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has called for urgent strategic interventions to strengthen personnel strength and expand infrastructure within the Ghana Police Service to enable it respond more effectively to growing security demands.
He made the call during the commissioning of a new Divisional Police Headquarters at Laasi in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region.
Mr Yohuno noted that the current police presence in the area reveals a significant gap in manpower, which needs immediate attention.
He explained that the Lower Manya Krobo jurisdiction, with a population of 314,859, is served by only 260 police officers, translating into a ratio of about one officer to 1,200 residents.
He stressed that this is far below the United Nations recommended standard of one officer to 500 people.
On crime trends in the area, the IGP said violent incidents remain relatively low, crediting this to deliberate policing strategies and cooperation with community leaders and residents.
However, he cautioned that evolving criminal methods require a rethink in policing approaches.
“Criminal activities have become increasingly sophisticated and require us to rethink and modernise our equipment as law enforcement,” he stated.
He emphasised the need for improved equipment, stronger infrastructure, and operational reforms to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of policing across the country.
