IGP vows swift justice over fatal Asawase shootings

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has pledged to ensure that the perpetrators of two recent fatal shootings in Asawase, in the Ashanti Region, are swiftly arrested and prosecuted.

The IGP gave the assurance when he led a high-level police delegation, including senior investigators, on a fact-finding mission to the area.

One of the victims, a 60-year-old man identified as Mohammed Madi Suleman, was gunned down on Friday, July 25, while returning to his car from a local eatery.

Eyewitnesses say the attackers, believed to be riding a motorbike, shot him at close range before speeding off.

His murder occurred just days after the Kusasi chief in the Ashanti region, Naa Abdul-Malik Azenbe, was killed at Asawase F-Line.

The suspects, both riding separate motorbikes, reportedly approached the victim at close range and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

The victim was initially rushed to the Manhyia District Hospital for emergency treatment but was later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead.

The deceased also served as the Kaadi Divisional Area Chief in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region.

The IGP and his team visited the crime scenes, where he instructed officers to intensify investigations and leave no stone unturned in apprehending those behind the killings.

Speaking during the visit, Director General of Operations at the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Vance Gariba, assured residents that the perpetrators will be found and brought to justice.

He also emphasized the enforcement of the Ashanti Regional Security Council’s directive banning motorbike movement after 7pm as part of broader efforts to curb such crimes.

Meanwhile, grieving relatives of the deceased have called for justice, expressing shock and heartbreak over the incident.

The body of Mohammed Madi Suleman was transported to Accra for burial after Islamic rites were observed by the family.

Police investigations continue as security remains tight in Asawase.
