The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has commended the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his significant role in strengthening policing and maintaining peace, particularly in the Ashanti Region.

The IGP made the remarks on Tuesday, January 6, when the Asantehene paid a courtesy call on him at the Police Headquarters in Accra. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was received with a guard of honour mounted by officers of the Ghana Police Service.

Speaking during the visit, Mr. Yohuno underscored the importance of traditional rulers in promoting law and order, describing chiefs as indispensable partners in the work of the police.

He noted that the Asantehene’s interventions in protracted land and chieftaincy disputes in the Ashanti Region have helped restore calm, reduce violence, and ease pressure on security agencies.

According to the IGP, these efforts reaffirm the constitutional role of chieftaincy under the 1992 Constitution, which recognises traditional authority as a key component of Ghana’s governance system.

Touching on illegal mining, Mr. Yohuno also praised Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for directing chiefs to take decisive action against the practice within their respective jurisdictions, saying the move highlights the continued relevance of traditional leadership in addressing contemporary challenges.
