A 47-year-old woman, married for thirteen years without a child, has opened up about the emotional struggles of childlessness despite being in a loving and supportive marriage.
Speaking on Let’s Talk with host Aseiduwaa on Joy Prime, she revealed that although her husband has never made her feel inadequate, she often feels guilty that his family name and legacy may not continue.
Her story sparked a discussion on the show, where relationship and family counsellor, Counsellor Perfect, analysed the psychological and emotional aspects of fertility and relationships. She also addressed issues related to attraction and mindset, offering guidance to young women.
“If you are attracted to married men, check your mindset,” she cautioned. According to Counsellor Perfect, such attraction often stems from emotional instability, low self-esteem, or a lack of moral boundaries, which can affect the ability to form healthy relationships. “Your attraction reflects your thought patterns. It could indicate that something in your mind needs renewal,” she explained.
Counsellor Perfect highlighted how mindset influences fertility. Many women struggling to conceive may unknowingly allow fear, guilt, or negative thoughts to interfere with their ability to get pregnant.
“One way of conceiving has to do with how you think and what you say about yourself concerning pregnancy. Accept that you will have children and believe it will happen. Think positively and avoid negative thoughts,” she advised.
She emphasised that words carry power and can create emotional barriers, encouraging women to speak faith-filled affirmations and believe in the possibility of motherhood, regardless of age or past disappointments.
Expanding on the connection between faith and positive action, Counsellor Perfect noted that some pastors advise couples seeking children to engage in acts that cultivate parenthood, such as donating to children’s homes and showing kindness to children.
“Some people want children but are unkind to children. Showing love and care for children opens your womb to have children of your own,” she said.
On male fertility, the counsellor warned that lifestyle choices such as excessive alcohol consumption and smoking can reduce sperm count and affect reproductive health. “Drinking and smoking reduce your sperm count,” she noted, urging men to adopt healthier habits if they wish to start a family.
Counsellor Perfect also stressed the importance of honesty and open communication between couples facing fertility challenges. “If you are impotent, tell your wife before she takes unnecessary treatments that could harm her,” she said, urging trust and transparency in marriage.
She encouraged the woman who shared her story to maintain faith while exploring medical options. Although the woman was hesitant about adoption, the counsellor reminded her that modern medicine provides several alternatives to achieve motherhood.
