A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Pianim, drew laughter from delegates at a major teachers’ conference after delivering a humorous political warning to President John Mahama.

The veteran economist was speaking at the 54th National Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) held in Accra on Monday, January 5, when he addressed the long-standing issue of teacher accommodation.

In a candid and light-hearted moment, Mr. Pianim revealed that he had deliberately avoided asking the President to support teachers with housing, despite pressure from within the association.

“Mr. President, here’s a fourth thing I will not ask you for. Even though Thomas is very keen on me saying, ‘ask the President to help us with housing,’ I said no,” he remarked.

Using partisan humour, Mr. Pianim acknowledged his own party’s past shortcomings in addressing teacher housing.

“We didn’t help you with housing. Why would I let the President help you with housing?” he joked, prompting loud laughter from the audience.

He concluded with a playful political warning, telling President Mahama that assisting teachers with housing could embarrass his party.

“So I’ll tell the President, whatever you do, if you help the teachers with housing and put my party to shame, our friendship will break,” he quipped, to the amusement of delegates.
