If you are arresting my people, why will I help you mourn? – Ellen Ama Daaku on arrest of social media activists

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Ellen Ama Daaku, has criticised the timing of recent arrests involving NPP-affiliated social media personalities, questioning why they should continue to join the opposition in mourning while their members are being detained.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Ms Daaku said the NPP was sharing in the grief of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the loss of some of its members in the August 6 helicopter crash. However, she accused the NDC-led government of targeting “NPP small boys” during the mourning period.

“If you are arresting my people, why will I help you mourn? These arrests could have waited until after the state funeral on Friday. The people being arrested are not running away,” she argued.

Her comments follow the arrest of two individuals, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, by the Ghana Police Service over a viral TikTok video allegedly threatening President John Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.

The NPP’s National Youth Wing has also criticised the arrests, describing them as an unnecessary use of police resources.
