Founder of the Union Government, Kwasi Addai Odike, has alleged that some influential figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) may shift their support if presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia fails to win the 2028 elections.

According to Mr Odike, the party’s internal dynamics could shift significantly after 2028, with Akyem elites positioning themselves to rally behind Dr Bryan Acheampong if Dr Bawumia’s presidential ambitions collapse.

He claimed that the former Minister of Food and Agriculture, who placed third in the recent presidential primaries with 36,303 votes (18.53%), is being groomed as the preferred candidate of the Akyem bloc.

“If Dr Bawumia fails to win power in 2028, he will be phased out of the NPP for their preferred choice, Bryan Acheampong, by the Akyem power brokers,” Mr Odike alleged.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, on Wednesday, February 4, he further accused the party’s leadership of stage-managing the primaries in favour of Dr Bawumia, describing him as the establishment candidate backed by the Akufo-Addo administration.

“They used Bryan Acheampong to reduce Ken Agyapong’s strength and popularity within the party for their future gains,” he claimed.

Mr Odike’s comments have intensified debates about succession politics within the NPP, as party insiders weigh loyalty against electability in the post-Akufo-Addo era.

Despite his criticisms, he commended the party for conducting a violence-free primary.

Meanwhile, former Bantama MP and ex-Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu, dismissed the allegations as baseless.

He urged the party’s leadership and grassroots members to focus on unity ahead of the 2028 polls.

“Rebuilding the party’s structures from polling stations to national levels is our priority,” he emphasized, while also commending the police and the elections committee for the smooth conduct of the primaries.
