The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), on Friday, July 11, 2025, officially inaugurated its Student Chapter at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), marking a major step in grooming the next generation of engineering leaders.
Held under the theme “Engineering the Future: Youth, Innovation, and Excellence,” the event brought together academics, professionals, and students to explore the crucial role of young innovators in driving technological advancement and addressing real-world challenges.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Gladys Quartey underscored that engineering goes beyond building infrastructure—it is about crafting creative, ethical, and impactful solutions to global problems.
She highlighted how today youth, equipped with digital tools is and global networks, are leading groundbreaking efforts in artificial intelligence, renewable energy, biotechnology, and nanotechnology.
“Young people are not just leaders of tomorrow—they are the changemakers of today,” Prof. Quartey remarked. “From solar-powered cars to affordable water purification systems, youth-led innovations are already making a difference.”
She also emphasized the need for early STEM education, practical learning experiences, and mentorship to nurture diverse talent in engineering.
Prof. Richard Amorin, in his remarks, encouraged students to embrace AI and other digital technologies to find practical solutions to society’s most pressing challenges.
He also provided insights into an ongoing UMaT research project investigating the environmental impact of illegal mining. Preliminary findings show high levels of heavy metals in local food crops, rivers, and underground water—posing significant health risks.
He assured attendees that the final report would be released soon to support policy and raise public awareness.
The event concluded with a strong call to action: investing in youth and promoting innovation and excellence in engineering is essential to building a sustainable and inclusive future.
