Former Black Stars coach Chris Hughton believes he should have been given a longer run in charge of the national team before his dismissal.
Hughton, who initially served as technical advisor to Otto Addo during the 2022 World Cup, stepped into the top role after Addo resigned following the tournament in Qatar.
His tenure, however, was cut short after Ghana’s early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where the team failed to advance past the group stage. The Ghana Football Association subsequently announced his departure.
In an interview with 3Sports, Hughton reflected on the demands of international management and the challenges of transitioning from club football.
“It’s about the structure – I was told that when you’re used to club level, it does take some time to adjust to national football, because the stakes today are very different in national football, and of course, working in Africa,” the former Newcastle United boss said.
“So I would have wanted more time, and I generally feel that, having been given more time, I would have adjusted better to the role. But this is football; it’s very much about results and emotions,” Hughton added.
After relieving Hughton of his duties, the GFA handed the reins back to Otto Addo on a long-term contract.
