Union Berlin defender Derrick Kohn has reaffirmed his dedication to Ghana, calling it a “great honour” to represent the Black Stars and insisting he would turn down any approach from Germany.
The 26-year-old, born in Germany to Ghanaian parents, has made a strong impression in the 2025/26 Bundesliga season, featuring in 15 matches and establishing himself as one of Union Berlin’s most reliable performers.
Kohn received his first call-up to the Black Stars in August for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali, though his debut was delayed while awaiting FIFA clearance.
He eventually made his international bow in the Kirin Challenge Cup, playing against Japan and delivering a composed performance despite Ghana’s defeat.
In an interview with Sporty FM, Kohn was unequivocal about his international future.
“A call-up from Germany is a big thing. If they call me, I will tell them the truth that my heart is with Ghana,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what happens at the World Cup, I’m ready to play for Ghana, whether it’s AFCON qualifiers or a friendly.”
Kohn also expressed his admiration for Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew, saying, “I have been watching Jordan Ayew since growing up. I’ve been looking up to him, and it’s nice to play with him,” he added.
With Ghana aiming for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Kohn will be looking to cement his place in the squad.
The Black Stars are drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, with the tournament set to begin on June 11, 2026.
