I went to Ablekuma North without malice – Hawa Koomson [Video]

Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has denied any wrongdoing during the recent parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North, insisting that she acted in self-defence.

The former Fisheries Minister explained that her use of pepper spray at the polling station was not to incite violence but to protect herself after being attacked by a group of assailants.

During the July 11 polls, violent clashes broke out when a group of unidentified men stormed the polling centre, overpowering the security detail.

Shocking footage captured the moment Koomson was forced to the ground despite deploying pepper spray in an attempt to defend herself. She was reportedly stomped in the groin area before police officers intervened.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Wednesday, July 16, Madam Koomson said she had no intention of causing chaos at the polling station.

“I always carry pepper spray for protection,” she said. “This is because of a past experience where my son was stabbed during a previous election. That incident changed how I approach my personal safety.”

She clarified that her visit to the polling station was peaceful and that the confrontation was unprovoked.

“They came with the intention to kill me. I had done nothing to provoke them,” she alleged.

The incident has triggered mixed reactions, with some critics accusing her of inflaming tensions. But Hawa Koomson maintains that her actions were driven solely by fear and prior trauma related to political violence.
