President of the sports_organization”,”Ghana Football Association”,”ghana football governing body”], Kurt Okraku, has reaffirmed his ambition to secure an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title during his tenure, stressing that winning the continental crown remains both a personal and national priority.
Ghana, four-time African champions, have not lifted the trophy since 1982. The Black Stars have come close in recent decades, finishing as runners-up in 1992, 2010, and 2015, but the championship has remained elusive.
Since assuming office in 2019, Okraku has overseen senior national teams that endured disappointing campaigns, exiting at the group stage of the 2021 and 2023 AFCON tournaments in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, respectively.
In the last AFCON hosted in Morocco, the Black Stars failed to qualify after not winning a single game during the qualifiers.
Despite these setbacks, Okraku insists his determination to conquer Africa’s flagship competition has not waned.
Speaking to Asaase Radio, he underlined his commitment to returning Ghana to the summit of African football.
“I want to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and that is the fact. Only God knows the number of times we have tried, and we have not been able to win the AFCON title.
“Basically, I want to win every tournament for Ghana, and I want to place Ghana on the medal podium on any given occasion.
“We have not won with the Black Stars, but for the U-20, they won the AFCON, and Black Queens won bronze at the WAFCON, and they are back again to compete at the WAFCON next month.
“The Black Starlets, after a number of years, are back at the AFCON and the Black Princesses just qualified for the last round of the U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, and hopefully they will be at the World Cup. They have been there two times under my leadership,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars are set to compete at the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico this summer.
