Minister for Communications, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, has said that her outfit has never requested mobile money data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

She said the report of her engaging in any such act came to her as a big surprise since she never authorized any of her staff to write such a letter.

The Communication Minister was reacting to media reports that the two government outfits were at loggerheads over BoG’s refusal to release the data.

According to reports, letters from the Communications Ministry contain requests wrapped in strong words asking the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to release the data to a private contractor, Kelni GVG, tasked to verify revenue generated by telcos.

One of the letters signed by Anastasia Marfo from the Communications Ministry said the “level of disrespect exhibited by the bank in this matter is simply appalling”.

This was after the Central Bank in a letter, signed by the secretary, Frances Van-Hein Sackey, insisted the request by the Ministry was an invasion of privacy of mobile money subscribers.

But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Ursula Owusu said her Ministry has not written for any information from BoG.

In spite of references made to the letter written by Anastasia Marfo from the Communications Ministry by show host, Osei Bonsu (OB), Ursula insisted that “the Ministry for Communication has not requested any information from BoG”.
