I feel weak – NDC Chairman on Omane Boamah’s death [Audio]

The Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor, has expressed deep sorrow following the sudden death of Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Dr. Kevor, who also serves as Acting Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), said he was devastated by the tragic news.

He recalled speaking to the late Minister on the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2025, unaware it would be their final conversation.

According to Dr. Kevor, both men were scheduled to attend the launch of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources’ Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme in Obuasi. Dr. Boamah had assured him he was en route.

“I took the lead by flight on Tuesday to Kumasi and left for Obuasi this morning. We were all waiting for him to arrive. But at one point, I tried calling him, and it wasn’t going through—only for us to hear of the helicopter crash. We rushed to the scene, and access to the place was even difficult,” he recounted.

Dr. Kevor added that he has already dispatched a delegation to console Dr. Boamah’s mother in Koforidua and plans to visit her personally soon.

Dr. Boamah and seven others, including Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, died when a military helicopter crashed at Adansi Akrofuom while heading to Obuasi.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the Air Force helicopter, Z9, went off the radar after taking off from Accra at 9:12 a.m.

The aircraft was burnt beyond recognition, with no visible signs of survivors at the scene.

Preliminary information suggests the helicopter crashed into a tree, with bad weather suspected to have played a role.
