Former Roads and Highways Minister and MP for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has expressed fears that the Accra–Kumasi highway dualisation project may be abandoned by the current government, citing what he describes as a worrying historical pattern.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Asenso-Boakye disclosed that he wrote to President John Mahama on August 4, 2025, urging the government to continue the long-standing dualisation project initiated under former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

“I wrote the letter on 4th August before the budget presentation… I have always been of the view that the Accra–Kumasi highway project President Kufuor started should continue. I fear that this government will abandon it because they abandoned it when they came to power after Kufuor,” he stated.

He argued that the highway remains a vital national corridor linking major destinations such as Kwahu, Koforidua and other towns, while supporting the transportation of food from the Afram Plains, where government also intends to construct a major bridge.

The Bantama MP further referenced recent comments by the Roads Minister indicating that government may shift its focus to a new expressway project rather than completing the ongoing dual carriageway.

“For me, the objective of the expressway they are proposing is the same as the objective of the ongoing dual carriageway. The only difference is that one is three lanes and the other is two,” he explained.

Asenso-Boakye stressed that abandoning the project would amount to a waste of national resources.

“If the NDC government will not abandon the Accra–Kumasi highway, then I have no problem. But my worst fears have always been that it will be abandoned,” he said.

He urged the government to complete the existing dualisation project before pursuing any new expressway plans.
