The Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, has expressed concern over what he describes as an unusual surge in public interest in joining the National Security apparatus.
According to him, an increasing number of individuals are now opting to work as National Security operatives despite the relatively low pay, even when better-paying job opportunities are available elsewhere.
“There is no problem anywhere, but when you want to work at SSNIT and the CEO is not ready to recruit people, what will you do? Someone will come to you asking for a security job, and when you offer them one, they will insist on a National Security job,” he said.
In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Gbande, who also serves as General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), questioned the motivation behind the growing interest.
“I’m embarking on research to understand this, and I’m not done yet, but I believe it is wrong. People may have access to better-paying jobs but still prefer National Security roles,” he stated.
“You can get someone a security job at AngloGold with a salary of GH¢3,000 to GH¢5,000, and they will still demand to work with National Security—even if they’ll be paid only GH¢1,000,” he bemoaned.
Aside from the perceived authority that comes with the role, Mr. Gbande remarked, “It appears some people just need the ID cards to pursue their own agenda. So, it is not about how lucrative the job is.”
