Asante Kotoko interim coach Karim Zito says his primary focus is on guiding the team to success, not on whether he will be handed the role on a permanent basis.
Zito, a former Ghana U-20 (Black Satellites) coach, took over midway through the second half of the season following the departure of Prosper Narteh Ogum.
Since his appointment, he has rejuvenated the team, steering Kotoko to the FA Cup final and lifting them to fourth place on the Premier League table with 54 points. The Porcupine Warriors are also enjoying an unbeaten run.
Following their emphatic 4-1 victory over Dreams FC on Sunday, calls have intensified for Zito to be named permanent head coach.
However, speaking to the media after the game, he remained grounded, stressing that his focus is solely on performance and silverware.
“I never knew I was coming to Kotoko. I was just lying down when I got a call and was asked to come for the technical director job, not coaching,” Zito said.
“Unfortunately, my own boy left, so I had to take over till the season ends. So for now, leave me in peace to work and see out the rest of the league and then the knockout [FA Cup final]. I prefer [winning] a double, so for the position, it doesn’t matter. What matters now is that I’m leading the team, and we have to do better,” he added.
Kotoko will look to maintain their title push when they face Bibiani GoldStars at DUN’s Park on Sunday in their Matchday 31 clash.
