A violent clash during the climax of this year’s Homowo Festival at Sowutuom and Anyaa in Accra turned bloody on Saturday, leaving three people dead and several others injured.

According to the Accra Regional Police Command, the violence erupted when a dispute broke out between factions loyal to two rival chiefs during the sprinkling of kpokpoi, the traditional food.

The altercation quickly escalated into gunfire and brutal attacks, plunging the celebrations into chaos.

The deceased have been identified as Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah, also known as Nii Kwashiebu; Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan; and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo.

Their bodies have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Four others — Enoch Amevor, Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku, and Frederick Lartey alias Nii Obrafour — sustained gunshot wounds and machete injuries. While Amevor has been treated and discharged, the rest are battling for their lives at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital.

Police say additional security personnel have been deployed to Sowutuom, Anyaa, and Olebu to restore calm, as intelligence-led operations are underway to track down all those involved in the clashes.

The Command has cautioned traditional leaders and their supporters to respect agreed security arrangements and avoid acts that could trigger further bloodshed.
