The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described the late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, as both a national icon and a steadfast friend of the party.

Speaking to journalists at the funeral on Saturday, December 13, Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP National Organiser, highlighted Daddy Lumba’s immense contributions to Ghanaian music and culture.

“He was an icon. He was a legend. For us, we have lost a huge friend. He was a friend to the New Patriotic Party,” Nana B stated.

The final funeral rites were held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, following weeks of legal disputes over his burial.

Thousands of fans flocked to the Heroes Park at the stadium early in the morning, paying tribute to the musician whose timeless hits have become part of Ghana’s cultural fabric. The atmosphere was a mix of mourning and celebration, as devotees danced and sang along to his songs in honour of his enduring legacy.

The burial followed a decisive ruling by the Accra High Court, which cleared the way for the ceremony. Applicants involved in a family dispute had failed to raise the GH₵2 million required to maintain an injunction blocking the release of the body. With the payment unmet, Transitions Funeral Home was directed to proceed with funeral arrangements.

The court’s decision ended months of uncertainty that had delayed the musician’s burial, a matter that had gripped the nation since his passing.

Lawyers for the respondents argued that further delays would be unfair to the family, fans, and children of the late artist, insisting that the funeral proceed without additional postponement.

Preparations for the funeral intensified following the ruling, culminating in Saturday’s ceremony that brought closure to the long-running dispute surrounding the legendary musician’s last rites.

Widely regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest musicians, Daddy Lumba leaves behind a rich musical legacy that continues to resonate across generations. His burial provides an opportunity for fans and family to bid farewell to a true cultural icon.
