Former Asante Kotoko chairman, Herbert Mensah, has urged football authorities to take decisive action to revive the sport, warning that the nation’s rich talent is being wasted due to poor management.
His remarks come at a time when Ghanaian football is facing a sharp decline, highlighted by the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) — the first time in over two decades that Ghana will miss the continental showpiece.
Mensah, who served as Kotoko’s chairman from 1999 to 2003, made the call during the 2025 Ghana Football Awards, where he was honoured with a Living Legends Award.
He was recognised alongside former Hearts of Oak chairman Harry Zakkour and veteran journalist Ken Bediako for their contributions to the sport.
Now serving as President of World Rugby’s African Association, Mensah stressed the need for leaders in Ghanaian football to make the right decisions.
“Your award ceremony should serve as motivation for people to start to do the right thing. We have too much talent for Ghana to be a mediocrity,” he said.
“The citation is not for me, it’s for the people who travel the journey… but importantly, to the people who take the decisions to do the right thing,” he added.
