Helicopter crash: São Tomé and Príncipe President mourns with Ghana

The President of São Tomé and Príncipe, Carlos Vila Nova, has visited Ghana to commiserate with President John Mahama and the nation following the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives on August 6, 2025.

Upon his arrival on Monday, August 11, 2025, President Vila Nova visited the Ceremonial Garden of the Presidency to lay flowers in honour of the victims and signed a book of condolences.

He was welcomed by top government officials, including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah; his Deputy Nana Oye Addo Bampoe; Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa; Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shemima Muslim; and Marietta Brew, Legal Counsel to the President.

The nation has mourned the victims, who were en route to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Co-operative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP), an initiative aimed at combating illegal mining.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, calls for national unity have grown, with President Mahama urging Ghanaians to channel their grief into renewed determination to build the country.

Two Muslim victims — former Minister for Environment Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala and former Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed — were laid to rest in a solemn ceremony on Sunday, August 10, 2025.

An inter-denominational state burial is scheduled for the remaining six victims on Friday, August 15, 2025.
