Demolition works have reached Pleasure Beach at La, Accra, with excavators pulling down buildings and shops along the beachfront as vendors complain they were not given prior notice and have been prevented from retrieving their belongings.

Personnel of the 48 Engineer Regiment are carrying out the exercise at La Badi Beach Resort, popularly known as Pleasure Beach, as part of what information available on the ground indicates is the government’s emergency flood preparedness measures.

The operation reportedly began at Laboma Beach, where structures around the Kpeshie Lagoon were demolished, before extending to the entrance and shoreline of Pleasure Beach on Friday, October 2.

Storey buildings, shops and other structures have been seen being pulled down by excavators.

Some affected vendors say their merchandise and personal belongings remain inside their shops, but military personnel stationed at the entrance have prevented them from accessing the area to retrieve their goods.

They are appealing to the government and relevant authorities to explain the reasons for the demolition and clarify the criteria being used to determine which structures are being removed.

Some vendors have also questioned why the Labadi Beach Hotel, which they say is closer to the lagoon, remains standing while structures at Pleasure Beach are being demolished.

Pleasure Beach has long served as a recreational destination for both Ghanaians and foreign visitors, with businesses and vendors operating along the beachfront.

The demolition exercise is continuing as affected traders seek answers from the authorities on the operation, the fate of their belongings and what happens to their businesses next.
