Hearts of Oak pip Great Olympics to clinch 2025 Democracy Cup

Hearts of Oak have lifted the 2025 Democracy Cup after edging city rivals Great Olympics 1-0 in a tightly contested final on Friday, September 5.

The decisive moment came in the 70th minute when Kwesi Asmah struck the only goal of the game at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, handing the Phobians their first title in the competition’s history.

Victory also secures Hearts a place in a special mini-tournament to be staged later this year in the United States.

The match drew a high-profile audience, including President John Dramani Mahama, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, and the Ga Mantse, Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, underscoring the symbolic importance of the event.

The Democracy Cup, initiated by Parliament, is designed to celebrate Ghana’s commitment to parliamentary democracy while promoting unity through football.

Hearts had fallen short in the maiden edition, losing to arch-rivals Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium.

With the trophy secured, Mas-Ud Didi Dramani’s men will now shift their attention to the Ghana Premier League, where they open their campaign at home against Hohoe United on Friday, September 12.
