Hearts of Oak legend, Bernard Dong Bortey, has openly criticised the current state of the club, claiming it has lost its significance in Ghanaian and continental football.
The Rainbow Club’s performance in the ongoing 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season has been disappointing.
Following a trophyless end to last season, Hearts of Oak appears set to finish this campaign without any silverware as well.
In an interview with Original TV, Bortey drew a sharp comparison between the club’s glorious past and its present struggles.
“Hearts of Oak has lost its relevance,” Bortey said.
“During our time, the club was winning trophies, competing in Africa, and feared across the continent. Now, it’s a different story. There’s no silverware, no dominance—everything has changed.”
A vital part of Hearts of Oak’s golden generation, Bortey played a significant role in the club’s historic 2000 CAF Champions League victory.
He blamed the decline on a lack of steady leadership, clear direction, and ambition within the current club structure.
Bortey called for a revival of the values and strategic approach that once propelled Hearts of Oak to continental greatness.
