The Central Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Takyi Mensah, has taken a swipe at the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, describing the ministry as “too big” for him and questioning his competence in managing the country’s health sector.
Speaking on Badwam Mpensenpensenmu on Adom TV, Mr. Takyi Mensah expressed disappointment over the Minister’s handling of pressing concerns raised by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
He particularly criticised Akandoh’s recent call for retired nurses and midwives to return to active duty as a response to the ongoing unrest in the sector. “Instead of tackling the root causes of the crisis, the Minister is resorting to stopgap measures. Calling back retired personnel does not address the systemic issues affecting our healthcare workers,” he argued.
Takyi Mensah also labelled Akandoh’s approach as hypocritical, recalling the Minister’s vocal criticisms of the NPP government’s health policies while in opposition.
“Now that he’s in office, he’s doing far worse and failing to meet the expectations he once demanded of others,” he said.
He further condemned what he described as the disrespectful treatment of nurses by media personalities affiliated with the NDC, accusing some of making disparaging and even threatening remarks against health workers.
Calling for urgent reforms, the NPP official urged the government to treat nurses and midwives with the dignity they deserve and take meaningful steps to improve their working conditions.
“Their demands are not unreasonable. They are professionals who deserve better—not insults or political neglect,” he emphasized.
