Health Minister orders one-week probe into Ridge Hospital assault

Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh,

Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has directed a newly formed committee to complete investigations within one week into the assault of nurses and health professionals at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge).

His directive follows the circulation of a viral video showing relatives of a patient physically attacking medical staff at the hospital’s emergency department, an incident that has fueled public concern about the safety of frontline health workers.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) on Tuesday, August 19, Mr. Akandoh said he personally visited the hospital to interact with affected staff and reassure them of government’s commitment.

“The workers were demoralised, so I had to assure them of a thorough investigation. After my visit, we constituted a committee to investigate the matter within a week, after which the law will take its course,” he said.

Meanwhile, his engagement with GIZ focused on strengthening health sector cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, system upgrades, and capacity-building for regulatory agencies, including the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).
