Former Awutu-Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has stated that the violent assault she suffered during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun will not deter her from active politics.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Wednesday, the former Fisheries Minister described the July 11 incident as politically motivated, claiming it reflects how seriously her opponents, particularly the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), view her influence.
“I know I’m a threat to the NDC. That’s why they keep planning against me,” she said, alleging that her strong voter mobilisation skills unsettle her political rivals.
Viral footage from the incident captured a group of attackers reportedly calling her by name before physically assaulting her at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station. She was reportedly kicked and stomped, sustaining injuries to her wrist and groin.
But Koomson insisted the attack had only strengthened her resolve to continue serving in politics.
“This assault will not break me—it will only make me stronger,” she declared, rejecting suggestions that she might bow out of politics as a result.
She also highlighted the broader implications for women in politics, asking, “If violence like this goes unchecked, how will women be encouraged to enter politics?”
The July 11 by-election, held at 19 polling stations, was marred by tension and allegations of voter intimidation and political aggression.
