Gyakie shares Nana Acheampong’s pain over Daddy Lumba’s death

Songbird Gyakie has offered fans a glimpse into her father Nana Acheampong’s grief following the passing of Ghana’s highlife legend, Daddy Lumba.

Nana Acheampong was not just a friend to Lumba but also his brother in music. Together, they formed one of the most iconic duos in Ghanaian music history, The Lumba Brothers.

In an interview on Hitz FM, Gyakie explained that her father’s silence since the news broke was not neglect but circumstance, as he is currently outside the country. She revealed that the loss has been difficult for him to process.

“My dad is still trying to process the whole thing. It really took a huge toll on him. This is someone who has been with him right from the beginning of his career. We have been in conversations before, during, and after his passing. Since he isn’t in the country, I had to represent him at the one-week. But our family has been supportive and we’ve been by his side through it all,” she said.

Nana Acheampong and Daddy Lumba’s friendship spanned decades. The two formed the famous Lumba Brothers in Germany in the late 1980s and released their debut album Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu in 1989, a project that helped usher in a new wave of Ghanaian highlife still celebrated today.

Though they later pursued solo careers, their bond endured, making Lumba’s death a deeply personal blow to Acheampong.
