GWL uncovers illegal water connection at Adwoa Wangara apartment in Cantonments

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has uncovered an illegal water connection syndicate at the Adwoa Wangara apartment complex located in Cantonments, Greater Accra.

This discovery is part of the company’s intensified efforts to clamp down on unauthorised access to its water supply network.

The Communications Manager for GWL’s Accra East Region, Barima Barnie, who was part of the operation, disclosed that the apartment complex had been consuming water without any formal billing arrangement since its construction.

“Somebody gave us information that led us to discover that Adwoa Wangara’s apartment in Cantonments had made an illegal connection.

“It’s not as if they did a bypass; it’s a completely illegal connection. Since the building was completed, we’ve not issued a single water bill because they claimed they don’t use our water,” he said.

He further outlined strict sanctions that will be applied to all those involved in the act and issued a stern warning to any staff members who may be complicit.

“We want to caution our staff. If there is any staff member of Ghana Water Limited who is privy to this thievery—the stealing of water at Adwoa Wangara’s apartment in Cantonments—that staff member should start packing their things and leave the office because we will sack them.

“And we will not just sack them; we will hand them over to law enforcement agencies to face prosecution. The management of the apartment will also be handed over to the police,” he stressed.

Mr. Barnie also appealed to the general public to assist in exposing such illegal practices. He noted that GWL has introduced incentives for informants and assured that all identities will be kept confidential.

“We are pleading with the public. We have declared zero tolerance for illegal connections. There is also a handsome reward for informants—those who provide information that leads to the detection of illegal connections.

“We assure everyone that we will protect the identity of anyone who graciously provides us with information,” he added.
