The Acting Managing Director of the Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, has announced plans to shut down the Kwanyaku Water Treatment Plant due to alarmingly high turbidity levels caused by alluvial mining from upstream.
Mr. Mutawakilu announced the development during a media tour of the facility on Monday, September 1, 2025.
Mr. Mutawakilu revealed that the company will utilise drone technology to monitor and track the mining activities.
The findings will be reported to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for necessary action.
He assured residents in parts of Accra that the water supply will soon be increased to meet demand.
Following the completion of repairs at the Kpong and Weija treatment plants, water has been supplied to affected areas, and GWL plans to boost water pressure soon.
