The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has announced plans to begin prosecuting individuals who unlawfully use academic titles such as “Doctor” and “Professor” without meeting the required academic standards.
According to the Commission, the growing trend of people misrepresenting themselves with academic titles—particularly those conferred by unaccredited institutions—is deceptive and unacceptable.
Speaking at a press conference, GTEC’s Director-General, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, cautioned that only accredited institutions in Ghana are authorised to award honorary degrees. He further stressed that even recipients of legitimate honorary degrees should not use such titles as if they were earned through formal academic work.
“This situation has become a matter of serious concern,” Professor Abdulai stated.
“We started by issuing a warning, followed by a reminder, and we are currently engaging in naming and shaming. If these measures do not work, we will prosecute one or two individuals to serve as a deterrent. It is not an event—it is a process.”
He added that the Commission is committed to restoring credibility in Ghana’s academic space through both advocacy and enforcement.
