The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has ruled that the Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union under the Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) is the legitimate body to represent workers on the Governing Councils of public traditional universities.
In a statement dated June 18, 2025, and signed by the Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdullai, GTEC noted that the decision was based on extensive consultations and legal advice following persistent disputes between TEWU-TUC and TEWU-GH over representation.
GTEC has directed all public universities to immediately swear in TEWU-TUC representatives to their Governing Councils and ensure they are granted full privileges and responsibilities associated with the role.
The Commission further instructed that members of TEWU-GH must not consider themselves council members, even if they were previously sworn in.
GTEC expressed optimism that this directive will resolve the impasse and urged all parties to cooperate for the smooth governance of tertiary institutions.
