GRTCC suspends planned 20% increase in public transport fares

The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has suspended the implementation of its planned 20% increase in public transport fares, which was expected to take effect today, August 8, 2025.

The decision was reached following a high-level meeting held on Wednesday, August 6, between the Ministry of Transport and leaders of various road transport unions.

The meeting was convened to address concerns that the fare adjustment had been announced without sufficient stakeholder consultation.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Ministry said the GRTCC and other transport operators had agreed to put the fare hike on hold.

“Following the meeting, transport operators have agreed to suspend the proposed 20% increase in fares due to the lack of wider consultations,” the statement read.

It further noted that operators would continue to implement the existing 15% fare reduction introduced on May 24, 2025.

The Ministry assured the public that any future fare adjustments would be based on broader and more inclusive stakeholder engagement.

“We count on the cooperation of all transport operators and the general public,” the statement added.
