Gov’t yet to pay Suame interchange contractors – John Darko

Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, has voiced concern over the sluggish progress of the Suame Interchange project, attributing the delay to the government’s failure to settle interim payment certificates (IPCs) for work completed in 2025.

Speaking during the consideration of the Annual Audit Statements of the MMDAs in the middle sector, Mr. Darko alleged that none of the IPCs submitted by contractors this year have been paid, forcing many workers to halt operations.

“Truthfully, the pace of work there is so slow. Just last week, I met the contractor, and their staff told me that none of the IPCs have been honoured. So, they are there with only skeletal staff keeping things moving,” he said.

He urged the government to honour the payment certificates to enable contractors to resume full operations, emphasizing that progress would continue to stall without financial support.

The £140 million four-tier Suame Interchange, which forms the first phase of the project, is currently about 13 per cent complete. One of the major setbacks has been the relocation of Ghana Water Limited pipelines in the area.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene confirmed that the pipeline relocation has now been completed following an inspection by the Transport and Roads Minister.

“As of now, the major challenge has been addressed. The pipes have been relaid, allowing the contractors to continue their pylon and pillar works,” he explained.

Dr. Amoakohene expressed optimism that with additional funding from the Finance Ministry, the project would be completed within schedule, adding that adjoining road projects in Suame, Bantama, and nearby areas are also progressing steadily.
