Government workers in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region are threatening to relocate if urgent measures are not taken to address the rising cost of living in the area.
The Concerned Government Workers group issued the warning after presenting a petition to the District Assembly at Kenyasi.
According to the group’s patron and convener, Nicholas Antwi Bosiako, skyrocketing rents—ranging between GHC 400 and GHC 700 for a single-room self-contained apartment—in communities such as Kenyasi, Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Womahinso have made life unbearable.
He attributed the high cost of housing and goods to the presence of Newmont Gold Ghana, adding that transport fares, food prices, and basic services in the district far exceed those in Goaso, the Ahafo regional capital.
District Chief Executive (DCE) Hafiz Dauda, who received the petition, acknowledged the concerns and assured the group that a stakeholder meeting would soon be convened to find solutions.
He also revealed plans by the Assembly to construct more bungalows for teachers, health workers, and assembly staff to ease accommodation challenges in the mining communities.
