The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has assured Ghanaians that government will remain fully accountable for the GH₵1 dumsor levy as it rolls out new measures to ease fuel prices.

His comments come amid calls for transparency, including demands by the Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies, Dr. Riverson Oppong, regarding the handling of proceeds from the controversial “dumsor levy.”

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stressed that government finances are subject to strict scrutiny and oversight.

“Government has duly accounted for all monies, pesewas and cedis collected. Before every budget approval, monies spent are accounted for. The Auditor-General also probes how government has spent money,” he noted.

According to him, these processes make it impossible for government to evade responsibility.

“So there is no way we can elude or absolve ourselves of accountability,” he stated, adding, “At the right time, we will do it.”

Touching on the fuel price interventions announced after Thursday’s emergency Cabinet meeting, the Minister clarified that the relief measures will go beyond a single levy.

“The issue is we are not just going to suspend one tax under the new measures. There are about three of them,” he revealed.

He explained that the taxes in question were originally introduced for specific purposes, making it necessary for government to consult widely before making adjustments.

“They were introduced for a reason, so we have to engage all stakeholders to understand the issues better so there is no hardship and nobody bears the brunt,” he said.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu assured that details of the suspended taxes will be made public soon.

“By the next fuel pricing window, these taxes would have been announced for everyone to know what they are,” he added.

The government’s intervention is expected to provide short-term relief to consumers while maintaining transparency in public financial management.
