Gov’t to spend $1.4bn in 2025 on Eurobond debt servicing

The government has announced plans to spend US$1.4 billion next year on servicing debt owed to Eurobond holders.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance, which confirmed that the third tranche payment of US$349 million was finalised and disbursed to investors on July 3, 2025.

The announcement corroborated an earlier report by Joy Business indicating that coupon payments to bondholders would be made on July 3, 2025.

Since the conclusion of Ghana’s Eurobond debt restructuring in October 2024, the government has cumulatively serviced US$1.17 billion.

In October 2024, an initial payment of US$475.60 million was made, covering obligations under the restructuring agreement, including the first post-restructuring debt service.

This was followed by a payment of US$349.52 million in January 2025, and another US$349.52 million in July 2025.

According to the Finance Ministry, these payments show that Ghana is up to date on all scheduled Eurobond debt service obligations for 2025.

Expectations and Outlook

“The timely payment reaffirms Ghana’s commitment to macroeconomic stability, prudent management, and constructive engagement with external creditors,” the statement said.

The Ministry added that this consistent debt servicing should positively impact Ghana’s credit rating trajectory in the months ahead, as it reflects fiscal discipline and responsibility following the restructuring.

It is also expected to boost investor confidence in Ghana’s sovereign credit profile and economic recovery programme.

Furthermore, the payment will support stability in the foreign exchange market, as it has been factored into the Bank of Ghana’s reserves and liquidity management strategy.
