Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upgrading and expanding Ghana’s transport services to improve mobility and ease the challenges commuters face daily.

Her remarks come amid reports of overcrowded terminals and a shortage of commercial vehicles, which have reportedly led to unfair practices against passengers.

Addressing stakeholders in the transport sector at a meeting on Friday, January 16, the Vice President said the government is determined to build a transport system that is efficient, safe, and affordable for the public.

She explained that the administration is focusing on strengthening both public and private transport operations to ensure reliable services nationwide.

As part of immediate interventions, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang announced plans to supply new high-capacity buses to operators, including Metro Mass, Ayalolo, and private transport unions, to expand passenger services in the medium term.

She also revealed that efforts to repair broken-down buses would be fast-tracked so more vehicles can return to the roads without delay.

“His Excellency has directed that support be extended to Metro Mass, Ayalolo, and the private sector with new high-occupancy buses to augment services. Those requiring repairs will also be attended to quickly so they can be deployed back into service,” she said.

Beyond infrastructure, the Vice President urged transport operators to uphold professionalism and treat passengers with respect and dignity, stressing that improving public transport must go hand in hand with responsible service delivery to restore confidence among commuters across the country.
