Gov’t reaffirms plans to build stadia in six new regions – NSA boss

Yaw Ampofo Ankrah

Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has reiterated government’s commitment to constructing modern sports stadia in Ghana’s six newly created regions.

This follows a renewed pledge by President John Dramani Mahama during his Thank You Tour in the Western Region, where he assured the public of plans to build six new stadiums to serve the Western North, Oti, North East, Bono East, Savannah, and Ahafo Regions.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Ampofo Ankrah lauded the President’s vision and reaffirmed the NSA’s readiness to support the initiative.

“His Excellency the President is committed to ensuring that we have the best infrastructure in Ghana under his second tenure, and he’s already hit the ground running,” he said.

“We’re very inspired by his leadership. It’s one of the reasons we’re also determined to make a mark.”

He noted that these regions, created in 2019 to facilitate decentralised governance and equitable development, have long suffered from infrastructural neglect.

“These regions have called themselves the orphan regions for a reason. They believe they’ve not had a fair share of the national cake, and during the campaign, His Excellency listened to those cries.”

Ampofo Ankrah added that the initiative extends beyond new stadiums, with a comprehensive plan to rehabilitate and upgrade existing sports infrastructure nationwide.

“There is a plan for existing facilities — whether it’s re-engineering, expansion, or complete overhaul,” he explained.

“As for the new ones, we will use proven templates and management systems from larger venues to ensure they’re properly run. These regions will no longer feel left out.”

According to him, the overarching goal is to ensure inclusivity in Ghana’s sporting development.

“The six new regions deserve better when it comes to building a sports facility for them. There’s also a plan for existing facilities to be looked at,” he emphasized.
