The Security and Intelligence, and Defence and Interior Committees of Parliament have disclosed that the government has rolled out comprehensive security measures to prevent electoral violence, particularly ahead of the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
This assurance comes after a closed-door meeting between the two committees and key security chiefs, including the Ministers for Defence and Interior, and the Inspector General of Police.
The high-level session was convened in response to recent violent incidents during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Chairperson of the Security and Intelligence Committee, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, said the new security measures are focused on de-escalating tensions and ensuring peaceful elections moving forward.
“These interventions aim to reduce tensions around elections. We must learn from incidents like Ablekuma North to ensure they don’t recur,” she emphasized.
Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, also appealed to the public to avoid actions that could undermine the nation’s democratic process.
“We must protect our democracy and ensure voters feel safe to cast their ballots without fear,” he stated.
The committees further disclosed that security presence has been reinforced in Bawku to address ongoing instability and restore calm.
“We have been reassured of measures in place to contain the situation and restore law and order,” Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings added.
