The Government of Ghana has declared a three-day national mourning period to honour the memory of those who lost their lives in the recent military helicopter crash.
The period of mourning begins Thursday, August 7, and will end on Saturday, August 9. It is intended as a time for collective reflection and remembrance of the eight individuals who perished in the tragic incident.
A statement from the presidency indicated that the mourning will commence with a public tribute ceremony at the Ceremonial Garden, located in front of the Jubilee House. Beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, the event will include a candle-lighting and flower-laying service.
Members of the public, together with friends and family of the deceased, are invited to take part in what the presidency described as a solemn act of national remembrance.
The tribute activities will continue into Friday, August 8, offering additional space for citizens across the country to participate in the nation’s collective grief.
“The coming days are a time for unity and compassion as we honour the lives of those we have lost,” said Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications.
He added that this moment offers Ghanaians a chance to come together in sorrow and solidarity as the country faces a shared loss.
The three-day mourning will conclude on Saturday, August 9, with an “Evening of Reflections and Memorials” scheduled to take place at the Forecourt of the State House from 5:00 p.m.
This final event will bring together government officials, citizens, and members of the diplomatic community to celebrate the lives and contributions of the deceased. Official tributes will also be delivered during the memorial gathering.
Further information regarding a State Funeral and other arrangements will be shared via government channels. In the meantime, the public is encouraged to take part in the commemorations with grace and empathy, as Ghana comes to terms with a national tragedy.
