Gov’t introduces PhD scholarship scheme for nursing and midwifery tutors

Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh,

The Ministry of Health has unveiled a new initiative designed to strengthen teaching capacity in Ghana’s nursing and midwifery training institutions.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced in a post on X on Friday, September 5, 2025.

He explained the government will roll out a scholarship package that will sponsor at least 15 tutors to pursue doctoral studies, beginning with the current academic year.

The move is intended to address the persistent shortage of PhD-level educators in the sector, a gap that has long limited the advancement of nursing and midwifery schools.

At present, most tutors hold only Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees, which restricts the institutions’ ability to conduct high-level research, publish widely, and gain higher accreditation.

According to the ministry, the scholarships will help raise the standards of training by modernizing curricula and aligning instruction with global best practices in health education.

The new scholars are also expected to strengthen research output by conducting studies that respond to Ghana’s pressing health challenges, thereby influencing national health policy.

In addition, the initiative is expected to improve accreditation status, since more doctoral-level tutors will support colleges and universities in maintaining and upgrading their standing.

The Ministry of Health has not yet published details on how applicants can apply, the criteria for selection, or the universities where the scholars will study.

Nonetheless, the scholarships are expected to be highly competitive, with preference given to candidates who demonstrate both research potential and commitment to Ghana’s public health system.
