Gov’t in talks with 13 countries to employ Ghanaian nurses – Health Minister

The Minister of Health has disclosed that government is in negotiations with thirteen countries to employ Ghanaian nurses abroad, as part of efforts to address the growing backlog of unemployed health professionals.

Speaking during a visit to the Sefwi Wiawso Nurses and Midwifery College in the Western North Region, the Minister revealed that thousands of nurses and midwives who completed training as far back as 2020 are still awaiting employment.

“We have a huge backlog of nurses from 2020 who are still waiting for employment. The government is negotiating with 13 countries to export our nurses, and once these agreements are signed, it will open doors for many of our health professionals,” he stated.

According to him, the initiative would not only ease the pressure of limited job placements locally but also provide Ghanaian nurses with international exposure and opportunities for professional growth.

He further assured staff and students that government remains committed to strengthening the health sector through both local job creation and international partnerships.

Additionally, the Minister announced that government will sponsor fifteen nursing and midwifery tutors annually to pursue PhD programmes in order to build capacity in health education.
