Gov’t backs Trump’s proposed Gaza peace plan

The Government of Ghana has expressed support for a newly unveiled peace proposal for Gaza by U.S. President Donald Trump, describing it as an important step toward resolving the long-standing Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the proposal could help end years of bloodshed and pave the way for “a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace” in the Middle East.

The plan, which has received approval from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, outlines several measures, including the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the release of hostages by Hamas, an exchange of prisoners, and the establishment of an international stabilisation force.

It also recommends large-scale reconstruction efforts, the creation of a special economic zone, and the formation of a temporary technocratic Palestinian committee supervised by an international body chaired by Trump.

Hamas has reportedly agreed in principle to release remaining hostages but has called for additional negotiations, citing reservations about parts of the proposal.

Reaffirming Ghana’s traditional stance, the Foreign Ministry reiterated its commitment to a two-state solution that allows Israel and a future Palestinian state to coexist peacefully and securely.

“We stand ready to work with all international partners to advance dialogue and revitalise the peace process in the Middle East,” the statement said.

Ghana urged both sides to pursue dialogue, stressing that a sustainable peace can only be achieved through a settlement that acknowledges Palestinian aspirations and Israel’s security needs.

Despite numerous failed mediation efforts over the years, Ghana said it remains hopeful that this new initiative could serve as a foundation for renewed peace efforts.

“We hope this plan will open the door to lasting stability in the region,” the statement concluded.
