The government has allocated GH₵28 billion for nationwide road maintenance as part of a renewed effort to improve the country’s road network, with a particular focus on short roads and rural communities.

Speaking to journalists, Isaac Adjei Mensah, Member of Parliament for Wassa East and Chairman of the Road Maintenance Trust Fund, explained that the fund—formerly known as the Road Fund—is expected to generate about GH₵5 billion annually from its revenue sources.

Responding to public concern over the poor condition of roads, especially in rural areas, Mr. Adjei Mensah assured that the government is committed to fixing feeder and hinterland roads to prevent situations where farm produce goes to waste due to inaccessible routes.

He further called on the public to play a role in protecting the country’s road infrastructure. He urged citizens to report drivers and heavy-duty vehicle operators whose reckless use or overloading of vehicles contributes to road damage.

Mr. Adjei Mensah also revealed that the government is considering the introduction of enhanced road and bridge tolls. This, he said, will be part of a broader, sustainable strategy to finance long-term road maintenance across the country.
